Relationship Loyalty & conflict solution
That's why I often say that couples form between them like a political system. It's like the first political system of how do you resolve difference? Are you going to be like autocratic or democratic in terms of how you resolve a difference? Interesting. I like that. Sometimes I go back to um reminding people of how when you have two kids playing and wanting to play with the same toy, like how do you coach kids on what to do in that case? Do you take turns? Do you give both kids the same toy? Do you just remove the kids from the situation and say, "Oh, they can't play well together." Do you leave one kid crying, having to compromise in a way that was just really depriving for them and they were not ready for? All this to say that this solution that you're suggesting, which is to really put your minds together and figure solution that is good for everyone, is hard. I do think it's the best one, but I think it requires a certain kind of honesty and willing to give up a certain kind of investment, selfish investment in the thing that that you believe in. You have to like relax your convictions. It It makes so much sense to me because I feel like most issues are this. Yeah. And most people are not solving this. Yeah. and we're lost trying to solve some other puzzle. And I couldn't agree with you more that whether I'm talking to a family member, a friend, a coaching client, or I'm watching something on TV or hearing from someone about something, this is the problem. Yep. And this is the root of it that we don't want to accept that someone else may be right and we may be wrong. That someone else may have a better idea than ours and ours may be worse. and that the way their parents did things might actually supersede the way our parents did things. And we don't like that because it makes us feel almost disloyal to our own upbringing. There's like a feeling of I'm betraying what my parents did. I'm betraying tradition. Y there's a ego conflict there of but this is my identity. This is who I am. And by telling me there's another way, a better way, you're almost making me feel like my identity is becoming more and more insignificant day by day. And I'm losing something that grounds me. What's going to happen to me if I don't have this identity? Exactly. And the loyalty can be to to parents. It can be to to a particular group that you're associated with. It could be to your religion. And it can be to a an ideology or a belief system that that you feel like your yourself kind of depends on. No one wants to be in a relationship where their partner is just waiting for them to change for the relationship to really start. We're self-centered. We we've got like, you know, the the our perceptive field and we don't really see the other. and working through that and and getting to a more humble place where you understand that you've been more selfish and then in certain ways you are exploiting your partner. It's an important piece of the work. There's a certain level of acceptance that has to happen. Of course, we want to change and get better and grow with each other, but you can't really be in a conditional relationship. That's not going to work.

fix your own life first before going to save world
So that we can solve them. So, uh, you know, another one of my little quips was, uh, you know, um, a rational person, uh, can, uh, sort of a rational person should should cultivate indifference to things that are out of their control, right? Uh, or a rational person can find peace by cultivating indifference to things that are out of their control. Uh, and I'm as guilty as anybody of doom surfing on X or social media and getting worked up about things that I can't do anything about, right? like, do I want to be fighting those battles in my mind when I literally cannot do anything about it? So, if you find yourself looping on a problem, like you're watching the news too much and you're getting caught up in a problem you can't do anything about, um, you have to step away from that. And, uh, modern media is a delivery mechanism for mimetic viruses. And now, what's happened now is, you know, 100 years ago, 500 years ago, if something wasn't happening in your immediate vicinity, you wouldn't hear about it. it wouldn't be a problem for you. But now every single one of the world's problems has turned into a mimemetic virus which is going into the battlefield of the news and is trying to infect your mind in real time so that yeah so that you become obsessed with the war in Ukraine which is really far away or you get obsessed with climate change or you get obsessed with AI doom or you get obsessed with whatever and there's nothing as riveting as the old religion the world is ending the world is ending pay attention the world is ending and if you don't Cassandra complex at global scale Cassandra complex at global scale Well, and I would argue that large percentages of the population are essentially just infected with these mimetic viruses that have taken over their brain and are causing them to do incredible girration about things that probably aren't even true or are greatly exaggerated. But even to the extent they are true, they're things that that person can do nothing about. And they should put their own house in order first. So, you know, another little line I have for myself is your family is broken, but you're going to fix the world. Right? People are running out there to try and fix the world when their own lives are a mess. Oh my god. Right? And and I think it defies credibility if you can't fix your own life first. I'm not going to take you seriously if you can't fix your own life. Like all these philosophers who, you know, seem like people you emulate and so smart or like these brilliant celebrities and they go off and commit suicide. Well, you just kind of invalidated your whole way of life. It's like that line of in No Country for all men.

Trauma Vs Stress
Luckily, we're great at treating trauma if the reaction lasts over time. But trauma is something to be avoided at all costs. So, one of the ways that I love to think about psychological stress is that it's a lot like physical stress, namely strength training. Anytime you want to build muscle in the gym, you take yourself there and you pick up literally stressful weights. You know full well that if you pick up easy weights, you're just wasting your time. You're not going to get anything out of it. You have to pick up weights that are actually uncomfortable in order to grow. Psychological stress is the exact same way. When we are going through emotionally or mentally taxing experiences, it does not feel good in the same way that strength training when you're doing it right does not feel good. But that is how we grow. If we're comfortable all the time, nothingis changing. We are not expanding our capacities as humans. So thinking about stress that way, recognizing that discomfort, the strain of change is actually how we develop ourselves as people is not only accurate, it actually makes us less stressed when we feel stressed. Some of the coolest research out there has found that understanding the benefits of stress can actually improve your performance. So studies have been done that show that if you teach people that stress is natural, that stress is helpful, that it helps you grow, that it helps you perform, when they're put in challenging situations, they feel less stressed, and they perform better. In contrast, if people walk around with this idea that stress is bad for them, they get into a challenging situation, they become stressed, they become stressed about being stressed, and their performance degrades while their stress goes up. So, embracing stress, recognizing that sensation of, "Wow, this is a lot. I'm up against something hard and new and difficult." Embracing that experience is actually part of what helps us to meet that experience and bring our full capacities to it. So, there's also a line of research that falls into the category of what I would call social science proving common sense, which is basically what doesn't kill us makes us stronger. Now, that probably overstates it, but it's not all wrong. Many of us know from personal experience that going through really hard things is unpleasant at the time, but actually makes us better able to manage new difficulties when they come up. So, we have a line of research showing that people who have gone through hard things and found their way through actually build capacity and feel more resilient in the face of new difficulties. So, anytime we're going through something hard, as long as we have the resources around us, the support we need, we can recognize that that is something that we are going to have a payoff from. We don't necessarily enjoy difficult periods of our life, but if we find our way through, what the research shows is that we tend to feel more capable, less frightened, more able in the face of new difficulties when they inevitably arise. One of the things I really like about being a clinical psychologist is that I get to help people and I get to help people through very very difficult times of their life. And it means that I'm often up against incredibly painful experiences that people are going through. You know, the death of a loved one, the loss of a child. I mean, terrible, terrible things. These are emotionally taxing for me given that I'm trying to help somebody through them. But I've also found that the net effect is that it's changed my overall stress levels. Being up against very challenging situations, helping people work their way through very challenging situations has made me much more relaxed about the day-to-day things I deal with. I will often say to my own kids, you know what? I know what constitutes a crisis. This is not a crisis. So the mindset we adopt under stressful conditions changes everything. So, back to the gym. If we think about somebody who's decided they're going to build their muscles and they've taken themselves to the gym and they're lifting really heavy weights and they're doing lots of reps and they're coming to the end of their workout because their muscles are so tired, they're feeling two things. First, they're really uncomfortable because this is hard. The other is there's a sense of achievement. There's a sense of I got myself to the place where growth and change happen. There can be a pride in that moment even as one is feeling like and I'm going to be pretty sore tomorrow. If we take that mindset to other types of stress in our life, really hard intellectual work, taking on a project at work that's way bigger than anything you've ever done before, we can have that double experience. Both this sense of like this is a lot, this is uncomfortable, this is hard. And on top of that, the sense of I am going to be so much more capable once I get myself through this. I am gaining as I go. This will be hard. I will be tired. And once I've recovered, I'm going to have more capacity than I've ever had before. Recognizing that stress is actually a natural reaction and even a helpful reaction not only changes our mindset, it actually changes how our body reacts to stressful circumstances. So one thing we know is that when people had the sort of stress is healthy and good for you view of things, they are less physiologically reactive to stressful circumstances. Their heart rate doesn't go up as high as somebody who's frightened of stress. They actually have a better stress hormone response, a more moderated stress hormone response compared to somebody who is frightened of stress or is trying to avoid stress. So accepting that stress is natural and not only natural but healthy and growthgiving helps us to meet it more effectivelyto be less frightened of it and to even let our bodies react to it in a more effective way. So the longer I have worked on stress, thought about stress, lived with stress myself, the more my attention has moved away from stress to the questions of recovery. Stress is a done deal. Let's just start there. it's better that we accept it and in fact embrace it. What really matters is how we recover after a period of stress. Another way to think about it is back to the gym, right? Anyone who's serious about strength training works out hard at the gym and then protects time for recovery because they know that that's what's going to help them grow over time. So my main interest these days is not so much in do people have hard times or experience imp painful feelings. They definitely do. It's what do they do next? And for me, there's a great divide.
